Release Day: ‘Girl with Guitar’ by Casey Quinn

GirlWithGuitarFINALcover

After Kylie’s dad dies in a freak accident, he leaves her with nothing other than her crazy stepmother, Darla, and the ability to play guitar. When Darla kicks Kylie out and she loses her job all in the same day, she hops a bus to Nashville determined to make her late father’s dreams come true. Waitressing and saving her pennies to record a demo, her big break comes when she’s asked to join a tour going down the tubes with once platinum album-selling country music superstar Trace Corbin. But touring with Trace is hardly a dream come true since he’s pretty much drinking his career down the drain. If Kylie can’t pull Trace out of his rut, he’ll pull her and her dreams down with him.

Teaser:

When they reached the sunroom, Trace was a perfect gentleman—much to her frustration. He handed her a towel, then did not so much as glance in her direction as he stripped down to his boxer briefs and wrapped a towel around his waist. She, on the other hand, couldn’t get enough. The sight of his bare skin had her synapses firing like AK-47 rounds.

He was thick and muscular and had just a hint of a farmer’s tan. Back muscles rippling with each movement reminded Kylie of the horses her grandparents had. Something clicked in her head as she realized what it was that had her practically panting after him. He was loaded, like probably obscenely wealthy, but he did all the work around the farm himself. Still took care of his sisters. Himself. Had callouses on his hands like her daddy did, because he wasn’t afraid of hard work. Okay, and yeah, he was hot as hell and could sing a girl’s panties right off of her.

She peeled her wet clothes off slowly—hoping he’d turn and look, but he just picked up what she’d dropped and darted out of the room. She kept her drenched bra and panties on and wrapped the towel around herself. She was feeling majorly insecure due to the “not at all interested” vibe Trace was radiating in her direction.

Kylie headed towards the master bedroom with the intention of using that bathroom to shower, but changed direction at the last minute. Since Trace was gone, she’d go ahead and add her bra and panties to the laundry. Borrowing Rae’s clothes was one thing, but the thought of wearing someone else’s underwear freaked her out.

She padded barefoot back towards the sound of a whirring washing machine. Trace was still nowhere to been seen when she finally found the laundry room. She dropped her towel and tossed her bra in the machine. She had just begun to slide her underwear down when the sharp intake of breath alerted her to the broad frame that darkened the doorway.

EXCERPT
Two days later, the first Monday she was to start work for Drake Webber, Annie dreamt of a man chasing her down the streets of Los Angeles as she carried baby Alder in her arms. Was it Marco? She couldn’t be sure. At a bump in the sidewalk, she tripped and fell. Blood spilled onto the cement. Then, there was a phone ringing, an old-fashioned ring tone like phones from her childhood.
With a start, she awakened, sitting up in bed, the blankets tangled around her legs and her pajamas soaking wet from perspiration. The ringing continued; it was her cell phone. She’d recently changed the ringtone to that of the old rotary phones. Rubbing sleep from her eyes, she reached for the phone on the bedside table. What time was it? Not yet six a.m. Who would be calling this early? It was probably her mother with news of another boyfriend who left her penniless and unable to pay rent. This happened every year or so and Annie always sent money. And her mother always found one more loser to move in with a short time later.
“Hello,” she said, fully prepared to be annoyed that her mother had awakened her so early.
“Tag. I found you.”
Her stomach, like it might during a sudden five-story drop in an elevator, sank below her knees. Marco. His voice was rough, hard—she would recognize it anywhere.
Was she still asleep? Please, God, let this still be my nightmare, she prayed silently.
She trembled, the sweat-soaked pajamas cold on her skin. Her hand twitched, as if in a move to hang up the phone, but he spoke again. “What? Cat got your tongue?” She continued her silence, frozen. “Listen, bitch, I know it’s you. You’re all over the Internet these days.
All you have to do is put your whore name into Google and there’s a dozen articles on you. You’re looking good, especially compared to what a cow you used to be. I’m coming to town. Shouldn’t be hard to find you. And then you’ll pay for what you did to me.”
She dropped the phone like it was hot and stared at it. Then she picked it up and punched the hang-up button before tossing it back on the bed. She folded her knees, wrapping her arms around them and rocking back and forth for several minutes. Oh no, no, no, no, a roar in her head.

Excerpt:

The steps grew louder, until they were right outside the door. The brownies clung to Emma, shivering in fear.

“What do I do?” Emma whispered, the words sticking in her throat. The brownies looked around. Truss tugged at her shirt frantically and pointed.

“There!” she gasped. Emma followed her arm, which pointed toward the wall.

“There’s nothing there. Just a wall.”

“Not the wall. The vent,” Piers cried out, clutching her collar. “Down there, along the baseboards.”

“But I can’t fit in there,” Emma whispered urgently. “I’m too big!” Just then the doorknob rattled.

“GO!” the brownies screamed in unison as the knob turned and the door began to creak open.

Emma didn’t know what else to do, so she scooted out from under the bed and ran toward the air vent. The brownies clung to her, grabbing her ears, her nose and even the edges of the book, hanging on for dear life.

“Jump!” Mat screamed in her ear.

“I can’t.”

“There’s no time! Jump! Jump NOW!”

She was so afraid, she couldn’t even think straight.

“Jump NOW!” Piers shouted.

“Slip through! You can do it!” a voice echoed in her ears. She did not know if it was one of them shouting or herself.

“Slip through!”

“JUMP!”

“NOW!”

Emma took a deep breath and looked once more toward the bedroom door. It rattled and shook, and the doorknob started to turn. She turned back to the wall and looked at the tiny vent near the floorboards. Then she did something she never thought she would do.

She jumped.

What inspires you to write?

So many things can inspire an author to write. Personally, my biggest inspiration comes from music and film. Iwatch a lot of indie and foreign films, and they always give me great ideas. Most of all, they help me focus on character development and to get in touch with each character’s emotion. I always call music my writing fuel, because it often helps me visualize scenes before I write them or while I’m writing them. It helps set the tone, the mood, and the emotional impact of the scene and what I want the characters to do. Simple, gritty films can really influence my writing, and so can huge, epic movies, like the Lord of the Rings movies. Visually, those films are so beautiful and they really remind me of the beauty in the world and the constant battle between good and evil. Other inspiration for my writing comes from nature, being outdoors, and the people that come in and out of my life. Everyone leaves a fingerprint on my life in some way, and I always find use for those influences in my novels. Many of my characters are inspired by real people–people I’ve known my whole life, and people who I’ve only met once and never spoke to again. I draw from everything and everyone, and most of the time, the inspiration is unpredictable. I’m just along for the ride.
