Review: ‘Descent’ (Hidden Wings, #0.5) by Cameo Renae

descent

Review:

I was provided with an ARC of this book in exchange to an honest review. Thank you, Cameo!

General Opinion: Let me start this review by saying that Cameo is one of my favorite author EVER! I love every single book that she wrote, including “Decent”. Whenever she’s publishes  a new book I’m jumping in my bed like a small child.

Though I knew that ‘Descent’ is a novella, I was so sad when I finished so fast and I wanted it to be longer! I loved everything about this short book and it made me crave for the 2nd book in ‘Hidden Wings’ series, ‘Broken Wings’!! I can’t wait to see what will happen next and how Cameo’s characters will grow.

What I liked the most: I loved the fact that Cameo focused her attention on the action and didn’t describe too much. We learned a lot about Emma’s past, about her parents and more about Fallens and Nephilim.

While I was reading ‘Descent’, Cameo’s writin-style made me feel like someone was telling me the story, not like I was reading it. Cameo proved that she can also tell a story like a  grandfather does. It’s something very special and you can’t understand what I’m talking about until you read the book.

Other good things: The story warmed my heart.  It’s so sad, and beautiful, and heart breaking that I even cried. I loved the love story that made me scream and cry.

Do I need to say that the cover is one of the best I’ve ever seen? It’s just gorgeous!!

The characters are amazing, as always! I loved Sam, I loved Alaine, but I totally hated Lucifer (Hey!It’s normal!)

I appreciated that this book is written from 3 Points of view. This way I could know what both Sam and Alaine (or Jane and Stephen) felt and thought.

What I disliked about this book: This book is flawless.

Final Opinion: Just let me sleep until Broken Wings is coming out. I can’t wait until then!! I loved this novella so much!! Cameo proved her talent again with ‘Descent’. So if you haven’t read any of her books yet, don’t wait too much to read them. You don’t know what yo uare missing.

I recommend it to: Everyone

Would I read it again: Yup, definitely!

Do I want to read the sequel: Do I need to repeat?Yes, I’m desperately to read the sequel!

Rate: 5 stars out of 5

Blurb:

This novella takes it back…way back…to the beginning. A place where Emma’s lineage begins, and where answers lie in unraveling secrets of the past.

Excerpt:
Lucifer. His voice was like the softest of velvet and the sweetest of honey, filling the Heavens with the most glorious melodies. His music reverberated through every cell of your being; filling, lulling, and entrancing you with his song and worship.
Because of this, he was praised by all that surrounded him. But, it would also be that constant praise which allowed pride to seep into the tiniest crevices of his heart. Pride slowly turned to jealousy. Jealousy turned to hate, and it was that hate which began to alter and callous his once pure heart.
As time endured, Lucifer’s pride, his jealousy, his hate, and finally his deceit… led to THE FALL.

Am citit deja 50% si imi plac ela nebunie. Cameo e o autoare geniala! Are un talent urias, iar cand citesc cartile ei am impresia ca cineva mi le povesteste in persoana.

Huss. Cartea asta se anunta a fi traznet! Personajul principal e atat de amuzant! Cred ca voi citi in paralel cartea asta.

Review:

I was given a free copy of this book for the blog tour. Thank you!

General Opinion:  “Morrigan” is quite an interesting and lovely book. I read it in just 2 days or so. I really enjoyed it!!

What I liked the most: ‘Morrigan’ is a book filled with magic. Laura created such an amazing and unique world. Though Tir na NOg is a little difficult to pronunce.

The world building is very good!! The author obviously knows how to make us love it. Though some things were a little strage, Tir na NOg is such an interesting world! I’d like to visit it for a couple of day!!

The book is packed with action. Not from the beginning though. After chapter 16, there were so many things happening that sometimes it was hard to keep the pace.

Other Good Things: The characters are so adorable and likable! It was very easy t connect with them after a while.Tiarn is my favorite character from the entire book. I liked his loyality, protectiveness and his determination to protect Morrigan no matter what.

The author is very talented. She created an unique world, amazing characters and such an incredible action! I fell in love with her creativity and her book. I’m very excited to ‘meet’ this new author and her work!

What I disliked: It seemed a little bit odd that Morrigan saw Tiarn and feel in love with him, just like that.I’m not a huge fan of this kind of love.

Morrigan annoyed me so much sometimes! She is very stubborn and it annoyed me that she commanded things without thinking about other people.

Final Opinion: ‘Morrigan’ is a superb book, packed with love, magic and action. It’s a quick, fun read, perfect for holidays.

Rate: 4 stars out of 5

I recommend it to: Fans of new, magical words.

Would I read it again: Though I really enjoyed it, one time was enough.

Do I want to read the sequel: If there’s gonna be one, sure!

Try, try and try again

There’s a scene in Disney/Pixar’s film, Brave, where Queen Elinor (trapped in bear form) has to learn how to catch salmon in a river. This is a character who is the epitome of prim and proper, who lives her life by a set of strict rules and expectations about what a queen should be like. Funnily enough, she isn’t a natural at catching fish. But she tries and tries again and tries some more, until she finally succeeds. She doesn’t give up. Better still, she has fun along the way (and connects with her headstrong teenage daughter).

I could carry this blog post on by saying writers can learn from Elinor’s tenacity in Brave, but to be honest, it’s a lesson that applies to everyone. Whether you’re facing exams, taking your driving test, trying to create a work of art, or looking for work, the ability to not give up is a powerful one.

I know how tempting giving up can be. There’s comes a point, no matter what you’re doing, we’re it’s just too hard. You wonder if there’s any point in carrying on. And if you don’t, what’s the big deal anyway?

So what if you don’t learn how to drive? There will always be someone you can charm into giving you a lift.

So what if you fail an exam? You can always resist and you’ll do better next time.

The problem is, if you live your life excepting your small failures, they gradually escalate into big ones. And eventually you realise you’ve failed to fulfil your dreams. But hey, it’s no big deal. Right?

Wrong. It IS a big deal.

I wrote a novel, Anima, years ago, but something just wasn’t right. I allowed myself to fail and gave up on it. A few years later, I wrote Guardian. Different story and characters, but many of the same themes were there. Again, something wasn’t right. I almost gave up.

Then I gave myself a kick. I asked myself WHY I write. The answer? It’s my dream to have people read my stories and enjoy them. How was that dream going to come true, if I kept giving up?

I rewrote Guardian, from the ground up. The end result was Trinity. A book I loved enough to have the confidence to declare it done and send it out into the world. And the best bit? People have enjoyed reading it and more will enjoy reading it in the months and years to come. But Trinity almost didn’t exist.

So, next time you’re about to give up on something, ask yourself why you’re doing it in the first place and maybe that will give you the inspiration to carry on and do something amazing.

Excerpt:

was still zipping up and down Main Street, life moving on without me. I kept close to the building, in the darker shadows, as I glanced up, down, and across the street. The last thing I needed was for my guardian angel to take me by surprise again. The sidewalk was clear, and from this distance, I couldn’t see anything by the park across the street, next to Anthony’s building. I had never really registered that he lived across the street from Cemetery Park, so named because it was an active cemetery up until the early 1940s.

Sometime in the sixties, the city decided to convert it into a park, but they never moved the bodies. The place always creeped me out, especially when I saw people playing fetch with their dogs or taking a picnic with their kids, knowing they were on top of hundreds of unmarked graves. But I wasn’t prepared for what I saw that night.

Dozens and dozens of spectral entities were all around the park, obscuring the finely manicured lawn. In the last few days, I had seen other ghosts’ fleeting forms, but none as tangible as me and none returned my gaze. Here though, when I crossed the street and stood in front of the park next to Anthony’s apartment building, no less than four spirits turned their deathly gaze upon me. For a moment, I felt as though I couldn’t move, like a mouse caught in a corner as the big angry cat hunkered down in front of it, just waiting.

Of the four staring at me, two were small girls who looked to be about nine and ten years old. They both wore plain white dresses that hung past their knees and cinched up to their necks. Their high-top black dress shoes were practically lost in the shadows. Another of the four was a war veteran. Of what war I couldn’t be sure, but he didn’t look much older than me as he glared my way. The last was an old, hunched over Chumash woman. Her bedraggled, dark hair swung down, obscuring her face from time to time as she swayed where she stood. Her face was a relief map of wrinkles, a testament to the long life she had before she died.

I wasn’t sure who to keep my eyes on; they were all glaring at me but spread out enough that I had to make an effort to look at each of them. The larger of the two girls tilted her head to the side, drawing my attention to her. Her large eyes looked black in the night. She blinked slowly, her mouth opening slightly, as she lifted one hand and crooked her pale finger, beckoning me to come. Absurdly, I felt the desire to step forward, to answer her call, just like the pull of the White Light.

I managed to keep my feet planted on the sidewalk, though my toes were dangerously close to the edge of the grass. I had the feeling that if I crossed the line of cement and desecrated ground, that tiny waif of a girl would be on me like a rabid dog on the last bone in the world. I shifted my weight and took one small step backward. I heard the howling of the lost souls milling about the grounds. The girl’s head snapped back, and her mouth opened into a terrible black maw. She screamed long and loud before she rushed for me.

Her fingers were crooked into claws and her hands stretched out as she flew across the ground in her mad rage. I flinched against the sounds she made, feeling something for the first time in days, and covered my ears. I panicked and scrambled backward, tripping over my own feet, and fell to the ground. She was nearly on top of me. I started to gather the shadows about me, ready to flee, but as she reached the edge of the grass, she slammed into an invisible wall, then bounced off and tumbled backward.

The milling mass of spirits began to shift toward us. The noise and reverberating energy drew their attention like moths to a flame. I pushed back, putting a little more distance between me and the edge of the cemetery, before I got to my feet. I dusted my hands off on my jeans out of habit and straightened my sweater. When I finally found the courage to look up again, the entire population of the cemetery was pressed close to the edge of the grass, practically looming over me. I clenched my hands into fists to keep them from shaking and lifted my chin. They couldn’t cross the line to get to me, and there was no way they would get me to do it for them. I was fine; I just had to stay on the sidewalk.

The soldier caught my attention, pulling it away from the still glaring, screaming girl in white. He stepped forward out of the crowd. A few tendrils of pale white slipped from his shoulders. He wasn’t quite at the grass line. His face was calm and sad. I watched as he inclined his head toward me in a nod, which I returned. One corner of his mouth lifted in a small half smile. I stepped forward.

He lifted his hand, his fingers splayed as if he would intertwine them with mine. I lifted my hand, opening my fingers and began to reach for him. I took another half-step forward, a few blades of grass bending over the toe of my boot.

“Shayna, no!” a voice called out like a ringing bell in the still, silent night.

Sfarsitul m-a facut sa dau o stea in plus cartii.
