Blog Tour: “Layers” by Sigal Ehrlich (Book review)

Layers by Sigal Ehrlich
Publication date: October, 2013
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

According to Hayley love is a subject of ridicule, a myth created by hopeless romantics.

When Hayley makes a resolution to declare her loose lifestyle era R.I.P, it’s all good in theory…

That is until she meets Daniel Stark, a well-respected, mid-thirties business man who is known for his short temper, lack of steady relationships as well as his strict preserve of his private life.

Opinionated, sharp tongued Hayley accidently steps into his office leaving Daniel resolved to put Hayley in her place and have her in his bed.

Both Hayley and Daniel can’t avoid the immediate instigation of the attraction between them.

In a unanimously agreed upon verdict by Hayley and her two best friends, Ian the gay self-absorb, aspiring model and Natasha the witty, borderline neurotic soul mate, Daniel Stark is to be Hayley’s pure physical attraction, emotions aside era closure.

Will it indeed be a closure, or a beginning to something neither Hayley nor Daniel ever bargained for…

*I was provided with a free copy of this book for the blog tour. Thank you, Sigal!*

When I read the blurb for “Layers”, I was really, really excited about it. I wanted to read it because Hayley sounded awesome. I love heroines that know how to stand up for themselves. So I signed up for the blog tour and received my copy. And started reading it.

Man, I SO loved “Layers”! It was pure awesomeness!! It’s that book that you know it’s not the best book you’ve read, but you still love it.

I read “Layers” in more than a week, which is crazy, because I loved the book. BUT life got in the way and I had school and rehearsals and you know, friends and boyfriend and everyone wanted my opinion about something. So I couldn’t read as much as I wanted to. I had only an hour available for reading, but my mind was often to the characters. I couldn’t wait to finish my day and be in bed and read more of Daniel and Hayley.

As I said, “Layers” isn’t the best book I’ve ever read, but I still loved it. It has something very captivating in it. Some kind of atmosphere that makes you want to read until you reach the last page. It’s very engaging and the author has a way of making the world around you disappeaar.

Hayley, you are awesome! Jee, she’s awesome! I loved her! Probably one of my favorite characters ever.  She’s one of those female characters with a badass attitude. She’s smart, she doesn’t care about what people think or say, she knows how to stand her ground, she knows what she wants and she fights for it. She’s ironic, mouthy and charming. Loved her.

Ian! Ian, my love, I am in love with you! But as a friend! Seriously, he’s cool, really cool. I loved him. I need a friend like him, because a friend like Ian can always lift you up. Such an amazing personality that he’s got!

Oh, and Tasha! She’s such an amazing friend! I’ve always wanted a friend like her! Yup, she’s very loyal and protective! J

This book got me from the beginning. Ever since I read the first word I knew I would have a great time reading it and I knew I was completely hooked. Hayley was partially the reason why I liked the books from the beginning: she’s very different as a character and I wanted to find out her story. When she met Daniel, I knew something was going to happen between them. They had an “insta-chemistry” between them and that chemistry made me want to read.

The scene in the kitchen is probably one of my favorite scenes ever. I loved the dialogue – it’s funny, flirty and cocky. I loved Hayley’s attitude: she stood her ground, didn’t get scared of the man that was trying to make her uncomfortable and she was very mouthy and flirty. Daniel was really cool, too. I could never guess who he actually was and why he was there. He was very flirty, charming and funny too, just like Hayley. There was a spark between them and I knew they are meant to be. It might sound crazy to talk this way about two characters, but yeah, you can see how connected I feel with the characters.

Speaking about this… a great thing about “Layers” is that you feel really connected with the characters, even from the beginning. As I said before, Hayley made me read this book. I felt really connected to her – like she was my best friend. On the other side, Daniel is a little bit more difficult to read and understand. He’s really mysterious. You can’t understand him easily.  But this makes the book even more interesting and captivating.

I have to recognize that sometimes the pace was a little bit too dragged and it bored me. But yeah, whenever I felt bored, Daniel would  make an appearance and everything would go back to being interesting.

Hayley and Daniel’s relationship was sweet and hot in the same time. They are like magnets. I loved them together. They are perfect for each other and I seriously think they are meant to be. You could cut their chemistry with a knife. Besides, I like the way Daniel treats Hayley. And their love was almost palpable. It didn’t even bother me when they confessed their love for each other after 50%.

There is a huge plot twist that made me love this book even more. And that ending? THAT ENDING?! THAT CLIFFHANGER?! UGH I AM SO ANGRY WITH THAT CLIFFHANGER! I want to read the sequel now! The book and the ending leaves you with so many questions  (well, maybe not so many. 3 or 4.) and you just want to read the sequel because you’re really attached to the characters and you want those answers and you want to know what happened with Hayley and Daniel. Ugh can I have the sequel like right now?!

The emotions are really well described. Especially near the end. The pain feels real. Loved this thing.

All in all, “Layers” was probably the best book I’ve read this year (read 3 so far!) . It has an atmosphere that keeps you hooked, a main character that will make you clap and a really nice love story that will make you sigh and smile. I loved the writing style and I desperately need to read the sequel! Can’t wait to get my hands on it!

1.Would you tell something to us about your book?

Tears of Tess is my debut and I like to think it’s a story about redemption and finding the perfect other, even if fate sometimes seems to have a sick way of bringing you together. Tess is a very strong heroine, and Q, well I don’t know how to describe Q. He’s delicious, he’s dark, he isn’t quite human in his desires.

2.How did you come up with the story?

Tess came to me very strongly. I just went along with the ride. I didn’t really come up with it. Q evolved from a horrid anti-hero with no redeeming qualities to someone who is deserving of a women like Tess. I like to think they belong together.

3.When did you start writing?

I started writing Tess in July 2013, but I started writing a bunch of other stories which completely sucked four years ago. I can still remember the moment I woke up one morning and turned to hubby and said, I’m going to write a book. It was random, but I’m so glad I chased my dream.

4.Who or what inspires you?

Everything inspires me. Travel. Food. Music. Watching people. I have a notepad with me at all times and jot things down. I’ve just come back from a trip away in Thailand and I came away with a perfect story line for a new book I’m working on called Last Shadow.

5.Which is your favourite book series or book? Why?

I don’t really have a favourite as I have such diverse tastes. But I would probably have to say my favourite writer would be Laini Taylor and her series Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Her writing is gorgeous.

6.Which is your favorite movie?

Princess bride is an all time love, and I also really like classics like Jurassic Park and Matrix. Plus rom coms of course.

7.What advice would you give to someone who wants to publish a book?

Write and write and write some more. Don’t publish your first draft. Get critique partners. Hire an editor. Never scrimp on your cover. 🙂

8. What kind of music do you like?

All depends on the scene I’m writing. Sometimes depressing to get into the headspace of my character, sometime passionate, sometimes upbeat. I go with the flow. 🙂

9.Did you ever want to be a mystical creature?

Yes. I would love to have wings so I could fly and no longer have to pay for airplanes to go on holiday 🙂

10.How and when did you decide that you’d like to publish your book?

I wrote Tess knowing I would publish it. I started the first draft on the 2 July 2013 and pressed publish on the 28th August 2013. I was only able to do that from spending years learning my craft and working 14 hour days to get it done. Not to mention a super supportive husband

Do you have a message for my blog’s followers?

Just a message of huge thanks for liking my work, for sharing my words, for the messages, and love they send my way. I love each and everyone of them and I’m honoured to share some space on their kindles and bookshelves.

 Guest post:

We all have our guilty pleasures. One of mine, that proves useful at the most random times, is my love of entertainment and celebrity news. Some people check their daily horoscopes or fantasy football stats- I check up on what’s going on in Hollywood. One of the most utilized apps on my phone (aside from Facebook, of course) is my EOnline app. Several times a day I troll the latest entertainment headlines and oh and ah over photos from recent celebrity sightings across the globe.

If you’d ask me why I’m so intrigued with the happenings in movie and TV land and the people who inhabit them, I wouldn’t have a good answer. In a way it’s like asking an avid reader why they like to read so much. You just do, and it feels at times like it’s programmed into your DNA. It’s a hobby of sorts for me, but one I take very seriously.

I enjoy my role of being the first one in my social circle to know the latest break-ups and hook-ups in Hollywood, what movies have recently gotten green-lighted, and who has been cast in the next big blockbuster movie. It makes for good happy hour conversation if nothing else.

It’s easy to point to the reason for celebrity watching as a kind of envious observation from afar. These beautiful people make a living playing out fiction for our entertainment. They can choose to be anyone they want to be, there’s the appearance that they make a lot of money, and since we always see the same faces in front of the camera, we assume their life is glamorous and fascinating in a way that we ordinary humans will never experience.

But once you start peeling back the layers, you realize that choosing to live your life in the spotlight brings just as many negative aspects as it does positive ones. Watching an emotional Halle Berry and Jennifer Garner testify in court in an effort to protect their children from harassment by the paparazzi shines a much different light on the whole topic.

That’s the level that I wanted to explore in one of the major subplots in Grounded By You. The hero of the story, Carter “Sam” Groveson, is plucked from obscurity to star in the film adaptation of a well-known and loved literary novel. His life is changing forever and he has to learn to maneuver living life in front of the cameras. How that impacts his relationship with woman he cares about, and wants to build a future with, is one of the main obstacles that he needs to overcome.

Ironically, a real story came out around the casting issues for the Fifty Shades of Grey film adaptation that showed a parallel to Grounded By You. The original actor cast as Christian Grey decided to drop out partly due to the pressures of being thrust into the limelight. While this isn’t exactly what happens with Sam in the book, it was a relevant example of an actual situation where life happened to be imitating my art.

While I enjoy the glitz and glamour stories of Hollywood today, it’s the stories that show the human “in real life” side of the business that truly interests me. Probably because it’s nice to know that despite their jobs, at the end of the day, the people involved in creating those fairy tale, fictional worlds are more like us than we give them credit for.

Sarah Langham’s life was the epitome of normal until her dad slept with another woman when she was sixteen. It ripped her family apart.

Twenty-two-year-old Sarah has it together, though.

Waiting at the train station to go home from her first day of her first proper job out of university, she spots a man.

He is an enigma to her. She’s drawn to him, with his square jaw; buzz of hair; and his tall, solid frame, seen under the contours of his business suit. And he’s been looking at her, too. Fate pulls them together that night on a whirlwind date, exceeding anything Sarah’s experienced before. He’s even more into her than she’s into him. Finally, she wants to trust a guy for the first time since she was sixteen.

But then they discover something.

Something that meant they were never two strangers at a train station.

And it threatens to tear their future apart before it, really, ever begins.

Short author interview:

What inspired you to write Entwine?

I was in a bit of a rut and my friend suggested to free write to help. So I downloaded a program that blocked out my screen and had a serene and freeing vibe to it. And I wrote.

I wrote one scene and then during my second free writing exercise, I ended up continuing that same character and story. Fearing I’d get in a rut again if I turned it into a novel, I continued to write random scenes until about 10,000 words along.

Then I knew I had something special and I had to create a novel. The two main characters excited and ignited a passion in me I hadn’t felt for a while.

I have to thank my friend for the reason Entwine exists. It turned out beautifully, thanks to the way I approached it differently than I have to my writing in the past.

Tell us about your main character.

Sarah is an every-girl. She isn’t a virgin but she hasn’t slept with the whole town, she isn’t stuck up, or overly reserved, and she isn’t whiny .

Sarah is fresh out of college, starting her dream job but in her personal life, she’s stuck from moving forwards by hurt in her past. When she meets an amazing guy one night, she fears he’s too good since Sarah’s nothing special. It’s the simple, yet realistic quality about her I really connected to.

Sarah is understatedly unforgettable.

Who does your book appeal to?

Entwine is a unique one to classify.

Itevokes a dream-like style at times; in other scenes it’s emotionally devastating with the hurt Sarah feels; and sometimes it’s so damn hot your screen will be in danger of igniting into flames.

If you love your sexy reads and your emotional stories, Entwine is a great balance between that.

Book Blitz & Giveaway: “Stim” by Kevin Berry

Stim by Kevin Berry
Publication date: October 16th 2013
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult

Robert is different. He has Asperger’s Syndrome. He experiences the world differently to 99% of the population. Follow his entertaining and highly empathetic story as he struggles to realise and accept who he really is, try to understand other people—which he cannot—and find a girlfriend. Especially find a girlfriend—he’s decided it’s his special project for the year. Accompanied on this transformative journey by his quirky flatmates, Chloe (who also has Asperger’s, amongst other things), Stef (who hasn’t, but doesn’t mind) and their oddly-named kitten, Robert endures a myriad of awkward moments in his quest to meet a nice, normal girl…and not even a major earthquake will stop him.

This absorbing and humorous story is starkly told from Robert’s point of view, through the kaleidoscope of autistic experience.

Meeting Chloe in the café became comfortingly familiar and as regular as clockwork. On Mondays, Tuesdays (twice), Thursdays and Fridays, we convened in the café—nearly always at the same corner table, whenever we could occupy it, and with the same drinks—like déjà vu stuck in some kind of unstoppable time loop. On a few occasions, the time passed without either of us saying anything, but somehow comforted by the other’s presence. Sometimes we talked about our studies or assignments, but mostly we talked about ourselves. Or more accurately, I should say Chloe talked about herself. She had been entirely truthful about the verbal diarrhoea. Words spilled out of her mouth with a rapid staccato, machine-gun-like rhythm.

But I did not mind this. When I was in the café by myself, I could only observe people interacting socially, try to work out what was going on in their minds and what it was they were doing, to try to unravel the mystery of their behaviour. I never actually knew what was going on with them, could never properly interpret what I observed, because I could only imagine. Invariably, people behaved inconsistently and did not do what I expected or wanted them to do, and I could not discern any patterns underlying their actions. This was confusing, sometimes bewildering.

With Chloe, it was all very easy. She just poured herself out to me, wholly and honestly and clearly, and I lapped it all up like a thirsty kitten drinking cream from the saucer of knowledge. For the first time, I had a friend I could understand, and who could understand me, because we seemed to communicate on the same wavelength. I think she felt the same, but she never said exactly.

Chloe told me all about herself, how she had been first diagnosed when young, and passed from doctor to doctor and psychiatrist to psychiatrist, collecting the acronyms of different diagnoses like alphabet soup until finally she was evaluated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Once she knew that, she sped-read numerous books on the subject, assimilating their collective wisdom. The very best, she told me, were those written by fellow Aspies who had struggled to fit into the NS world but ultimately prevailed to establish their own place within it somehow, and yet remain true to themselves. Chloe said she could identify with their early lives, and that everything in her own life, past and present, made sense to her after reading those books. She had always known she was different, and now she understood why. And I agreed with her. I borrowed the books and read them too. I felt the same.

Chloe explained that her father travelled a lot on business and tried to make up for his frequent absences by ensuring that she always had the best care possible. Evaluations. Psych tests. Personality tests. Private mental hospital whenever she felt especially distressed. A seemingly interminable tweaking of her medications (eleven different combinations so far) in an attempt to find the right mix and dosage, a kind of educated guessing on the part of her doctors. There is so little known about the human mind in general and the Aspie mind in particular. It is so complex that all the doctors can do is just try one thing at a time, pick up the pieces if it does not work out as planned, and try something else, trying to solve the incomplete jigsaw of a fractured human mind.

One day when she met me in the café, my life changed forever.

The Thrill of It by Lauren Blakely
(No Regrets #1)
Publication date: November 21st 2013
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

A new adult story of Love. Sex. Addiction. Blackmail. And Power…

Some say love can be an addiction. Others say it’s the thing that makes life worth living. Let me tell you everything I know about love…Love isn’t patient, love isn’t kind. Love is a game, a chase. A thrill. Love is wild and war-like, and every man and woman must fight for themselves. At least that’s how it was for me. A high-priced virgin call girl by the time I started college, I was addicted to love and to sex. Even though I’ve never had either. I controlled love, played it, and held the world in the palm of my hands. Then I fell down from those highs, and I’m being blackmailed for all my mistakes, forced to keep secrets from everyone, except the only guy I don’t regret.

With all the other women, I knew what they were. They were temporary. They were pills, they were bottles, they took away all the pain, and numbed the awful memories that wore down my ragged, wasted heart. Until I met Harley. She’s the only girl I ever missed when she walked away. But now she’s back in my life, every day, and there are no guarantees for us, especially since I don’t know how to tell her my secrets. What happened to my family. All I know is she’s the closest I’ve ever come to something real, and I want to feel every second of it.

How can you love with no regrets when regret is all you know?

*I was provided with a free copy of this book for the blog tour. Thank you!*

“Reckless” is a book that you need to read when you are bored of all those cheesy, sappy New Adult novels. Why? Because it makes ou realize that there is still hope for New Adult authors. There are still talented authors that write because this is what they like to do, not because it’s cool.

I have to recognize, even though the story hooked me from the beginning, my first feelings for the book after reading the first pages were like ‘Meh, I don’t know.’ Milly annoyed me to pieces. I couldn’t believe how stupid she was. How could she allow Pierre to treat her like that?! And why? Also, it seemed a little bit like a shallow story, about a girl who whores aroung and gets treated like shit. But, after Milly is sent to live with her aunt, the situation changes. Milly is not stupid anymore. The story is nowhere near shallow. And from a feeling of meh-i-don’t-know I came to a feeling of OMG-blown-away!

I appreciated a lot of things at this book, but what I loved the most about it is that is different. Let me tell you some examples. What broke Milly wasn’t a bad experience with a guy. It was the death of her twin. Oh, and Jeremy wasn’t just abs. It was his eyes that Milly was crazy about. And the list could go on.

The story may seem sad, heart breaking. It isn’t. This book did not make me cry. Yes, it’s a tragic story. Yes, it made me sad, but it also made me feel joy. It made me smile. Milly’s story isn’t just tragic. It’s also a beautiful story about learning how to live again. It’s a beautiful love story that warmed my heart.

Uf, I have so much to say about ‘Reckless’!

This book taught me that coping with my feelings is the best thing I can do. It taught me that there is always hope. Milly’s journey through fining herself also taught me not to give up. There’s always someone or something that will save you even when you don’t want to be saved.

The plot is very hooking an easy to ‘get along with’. I was hooked by Milly’s story immediately after I started reaing it. The mix between the present time and the past time was one of my favorite things at ‘Reckless’. The author chose to tell and show us Milly and Christian’s story in a different, but great way. I loved those flashes from the past and they way Milly would still talk to Christian. It showed that the story has a strong background, which means that the author tought the story before she wrote it down.

There are twon plot twists that will shock you an will change the story entirely.

Now to the characters.

As I said before, in the beginning, I didn’t like Milly at all. She was really stupid and she acted like a brainless brat. But as the story goes on, we get to meet the real Milly, the one who isn’t hiding behind a wall of indiference. Milly is a sweet, determinated, caring, smart and funny girl. She can get scared sometimes, but she sure as hell knows how to stand up for herself. The way she cared about Rose and her coursins showed her true self.

Jerome is a great guy. I really liked it. A lot. Even though, I have to admit… I feel like I don’t know his personality that well. But maybe I didn’t focus my attention enough on him, or maybe the author didn’t. But he’s a great guy and he’s perfect for Milly.

Ava. I didn’t like her, honestly. She was selfish, crazy in a wrong way, a bad influence for Milly and a bad friend. I didn’t like her.

Same thing with Pierre. I felt that something was wrong with him from the beginning. Such a jerk!

Milly’s parents we obviously broken. But their change of attitude near the end was a little too abrupt. I felt like it came out of the blue, to be honest.

Rose was one of my favorite characters. She was so sweet! Same thing with Milly’s cousin and with Sheily. I liked them.

Overall, the characters felt real and well portrated. A strong point of this book are the characters.

Milly and Jerome’s relationship was perfect. It was different and beautiful. It was never about sex between them. There aren’t steamy scenes in this book. Their kisses were just pure kisses. They were kissing to show their feelings, not to turn each other on. It wasn’t Jerome’s good looks that made Molly fall for him. It was his personality and the feeling that came along with him.

The writing style is oh-so-beautiful. Loved it! It’s beautiful, and dramatic, and cursive, an sometimes funny. It’s exactly the way I like it. Lo-ved it! It’s so hooking an it makes the book easy to read. I love the dialogue. It’s smart, funny, deep… and I love it! 😀

There’s so much more I hve to say about ‘Reckless’, but I’ve already wrote 4 pages and I don’t want to bore you.

Oh, one more thing. I really like the cover.

It just pisses me off that “Reckless” isn’t a bestseller already. Everyone shoudl read this book! People, this is a must read! Go read it! At least, give it a try! You might be surprised and find your new fav book. There’s so much hiding between the pages of this book that it’s overwhelming. A powerful story about a girl finding her true self, a beautiful love story and awesome characters. Highly recommended!

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author J. A. Redmerski brings us the second book in her heart-renching series about two 20-somethings who find each other in their darkest moment.

Camryn Bennett has never been happier. Five months after meeting on a Greyhound bus, she and her soul mate Andrew Parrish are engaged-and a wedding isn’t the only special event in their future. Nervous but excited, Camryn can’t wait to begin the rest of her life with Andrew, a man she knows in her heart will love her always. They have so much to look forward to-until tragedy blindsides them.

Andrew doesn’t understand how this could happen to them. He’s trying to move on, and thought Camryn was doing the same. But when Andrew discovers Camryn is secretly harboring a mountain of pain and attempting to numb it in damaging ways, there is nothing he won’t do to bring her back to life. Determined to prove that their love can survive anything, Andrew decides to take Camryn on a new journey filled with hope and passion. If only he can convince her to come along for the ride…

Camryn still loves the newer stuff and the Civil Wars more than anything and so that’s usually what we play.

Tonight will be no different.

I love watching her perform them next to me up on stage because she becomes so vibrant and playful and sexy as hell. Not that she isn’t all of those things already, but it’s like another more daring and flirty side of her comes out when she’s singing. And she doesn’t just sing—she puts on a show. I think it’s that little actress she’s always had buried somewhere in herself. She told me she performed in plays at school, and I can definitely see she has the knack for it.

But singing alongside me also seems to make her happy, and that’s why tonight is so important.

“I’m so nervous,” Camryn says next to my ear, having to speak loudly over the music.

I make a pffft sound with my lips. “Oh, please. Since when do you get nervous anymore? We’ve done this dozens of times.”

“I know, but I’m singing in front of your brother this time.”

“He can’t sing for shit, so his opinion is hardly valid.”

She smiles. “Well, I’m not nervous to the point that I don’t want to do it. I guess it’s actually kind of exciting.”

“That’s my girl,” I say and lean in to kiss her lips.

“Those two girls,” Camryn yells to me without looking in their direction, “front table to your left, they’re having sex with you in their heads right now, I swear to God.”

I laugh lightly and shake my head. We’d started picking people in the crowd to sing to lately.

“And that guy standing next to the woman in the purple shirt,” I say, nodding subtly in his direction, “has had your thighs wrapped around his head since you walked on this stage.”

“So it’ll be them tonight then, huh?” she asks.

I nod and say, “Uh-huh.”

“Make sure you give it to them good, baby,” she says, grinning wickedly at me.

“Oh, I will,” I say with the same amount of wicked on my face.
