Author interview: Whitney Barbetti, author of “Ten Below Zero”

Hello, my dear friends! Today, 14 February 2015, Valentine’s Day, I have a small surprise for you!

I have arranged an interview with the author Whitney Barbetti, the one that wrote Ten below Zero, an amazing book which I have read (and loved!) this year. If you remember, I’ve posted the review a few days ago. If you don’t remember it, you can always read it here. Be aware, please, that the review is written in Romanian since… well, 90% of my readers are from Romania. I will try to translate the review in English these days, so everyone could read it.

Whitney accepted my interview request (thank you again, Whitney!) and today I have the pleasure to offer you an interview with her! I am very excited for it and I really hope you enjoy it as much as I did. 🙂

But first, let’s take a look at “Ten Below Zero”:

“In here,” he said, pushing on the skin above my heart, “you’re ten below zero. And you’re closer to death than I am.”

My name is Parker. My body is marked with scars from an attack I don’t remember. I don’t want to remember. I choose to live my life by observation, not through experience. While people are laughing and kissing and connecting, I’m in the corner. Watching them live. I’m indifferent to everything, everyone. The only emotion I feel with any kind of depth is annoyance, and I feel it often.

A text message sent to the wrong number proves to be my undoing.

His name is Everett, but I call him rude. He’s pushy, he’s arrogant, he crowds my personal space, and worst of all: he makes me feel.

He chooses to wear all black, all the time, as if he’s waiting to attend a funeral. Probably because he is.

Everett is dying. And he’s spending his final days living, truly living. In doing so, he’s forcing me to feel, to heal. To come face to face with the demons I suppressed in my memory.

He hurts me, he fulfills me, he completes me. And still, he’s dying.

The book can be bought from Bookdepository.

Now that we all know what one of her books is about, let’s see the interview.

1.Hello, Whitney! It’s a pleasure to have you on my blog. Would you like to tell us something about you, please?

I live in southeast Idaho, a land of potatoes and windmills.

2.Could you please tell us something about your books?

Ten Below Zero is my standalone novel. He Found Me and its sequel, He Saved Me are about Andra, a runaway, who unexpectedly falls for Julian.

3.Describe “Ten Below Zero” in five words, please.

Here’s what I hope: poignant, emotional, thought provoking, romantic.

(I can assure you, Whitney, that your book is exactly these things. 😉 )

4.How did you come up with the story for “Ten Below Zero”?

Ten Below Zero is based on true people and a true story. I felt like I ripped a piece of my soul writing Ten Below Zero.

5.When did you start writing?

When I was probably ten years old.

6.Who or what inspires you?

Really rich, evocative writing.  Stephen King, Tarryn Fisher, and a whole slew of great poets. I particularly love William Faulkner, Poe, Shakespeare, and more modern: Christopher Poindexter, Mary Kate Teske, and Tyler Knott Gregson.

7.Which is your favourite book series or book? Why?

I have so many, but The Bible stands out among them all. There’s a lot of poetry in the Bible and I’ve never been unable to find a verse that speaks to me when I really need it.

8.What other things do you enjoy doing?

I enjoy baking, cooking, reading, watching terrible television. 😉

9.What advice would you give to someone who wants to publish a book?

Never stop writing, and always be true to yourself. Accept that you will never please every single reader out there.

10.What kind of music do you enjoy?

Mostly alternative, but I love classic rock too.

11.What are your future plans?

I’m going to keep writing! I’ll write until I’ve worn the pads of my fingers.

Do you have a message for our readers today?

If you are reading a book that is easy to put down, chances are it’s not the book for you. Don’t waste your time reading literature that doesn’t set your soul on fire.

Ok, people! This was Whitney Barbetti for you! Hope you all enjoyed this interview. Please give us your thoughts in the comments below.

Recenzie: “Let it snow” de John Green & Maureen Johnson & Lauren Myracle

let it snow

The New York Times bestseller!

Sparkling white snowdrifts, beautiful presents wrapped in ribbons, and multicolored lights glittering in the night through the falling snow. A Christmas Eve snowstorm transforms one small town into a romantic haven, the kind you see only in movies. Well, kinda. After all, a cold and wet hike from a stranded train through the middle of nowhere would not normally end with a delicious kiss from a charming stranger. And no one would think that a trip to the Waffle House through four feet of snow would lead to love with an old friend. Or that the way back to true love begins with a painfully early morning shift at Starbucks. Thanks to three of today’s bestselling teen authors—John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle—the magic of the holidays shines on these hilarious and charming interconnected tales of love, romance, and breathtaking kisses.

“Tender without being mushy, these carefully crafted stories of believable teen love will leave readers warm inside for the holidays.”—School Library Journal

“Contemporary culture, humorous romantic developments and strong characters enhance this collaborative effort.”—Kirkus Reviews

The Patron Saint of Pigs”.

Toate povestile se invart in jurul aceluiasi subiect: dragostea.

In concluzie, a fost o lectura frumoasa, usoara, in ton cu Craciunul. Atunci are cel mai mult farmec! 😉

Recenzie: “Gabriel’s inferno” (Gabriel’s Inferno #1) de Sylvain Reynard

Enigmatic and sexy, Professor Gabriel Emerson is a well-respected Dante specialist by day, but by night he devotes himself to an uninhibited life of pleasure. He uses his notorious good looks and sophisticated charm to gratify his every whim, but is secretly tortured by his dark past and consumed by the profound belief that he is beyond all hope of redemption.

When the sweet and innocent Julia Mitchell enrolls as his graduate student, his attraction and mysterious connection to her not only jeopardizes his career, but sends him on a journey in which his past and his present collide.

An intriguing and sinful exploration of seduction, forbidden love, and redemption, Gabriel’s Inferno is a captivating and wildly passionate tale of one man’s escape from his own personal hell as he tries to earn the impossible—forgiveness and love.

Nu aveam nimic specific in cap. M-am dus si am luat raft cu raft, in cautarea cartii perfecte. Atunci am vazut-o, pe cel mai jos raft, asteptandu-ma cuminte si soptindu-mi “Cumpara-ma! Cumpara-ma”.
Tot ce conta era cartea si faptul ca eu o aveam in maini, in sfarsit.
Am terminat-o Vineri, adica acum doua zile, si….my, my, mi-a placut la nebunie!
Vreau sa fie numai a mea si a nimanui altcuiva.
In momentul acela, Gabriel incepe, incet incet, sa devina altcineva.
Relatia dintre Julai si Gabriel m-a incantat si m-a facut sa zambesc.
Daca cautati o poveste cu multa actiune, n-ati gasit-o. “Infernul lui Gabriel” are un ritm alert, insa nu as caracteriza actiune aca genul acela de actiune care sa te ridice de pe scaun.

“Well hello everyone! My name is…”

Tyker Oakley.

In cele cateva zile in care l-am urmarit pe Tyler, toate proiectele in care s-a implicat.

Cel putin, mi-a castigat-o mie foarte repede.

Book trailer:

I opened my mouth to deny it, but closed it just as fast, knowing there was no sense in arguing. Nyx could sense these things. I lowered my head, my cheeks on fire from embarrassment. She knew that she was right, and so did I.

“I’m not judging or reproaching you, Isis.” Nyx’s porcelain face rested on her fist.

“I haven’t admitted to anything.”

Her lips lifted at the corners with a confidence I had come to relate with deities. “Nor have you denied it.”

That was the end of my defense. A crow cawed, hiding some-
where in the tree branches—mocking me, no less. I traced the white, scrolled, metal arm on the patio chair, busying my hand to keep from biting what was left of my nails.

“Does it make you uncomfortable that I know this much?”

“It has since I met you.”

“Oh.” Nyx looked surprised. “I’m sorry you feel that way. I don’t know the limit on how intimate mother and daughter-in-law talks should be.”

Daughter-in-law? That word was too awkward to use in this conversation. I felt like an ant under a magnifying glass, churning under the intensity of the rays of commitment.

“I won’t dwell on it anymore, and you can rest assured that I won’t tell.”

“What are you two gossiping about?” A voice came from behind me.

David’s hand landed on my shoulder and I tensed. His lips touched the side of my forehead for a moment.

“Girl talk,” Nyx said. “You should know better than to ask.”

Review: “Tethered Wings” by Cameo Renae (“Hidden Wings” #3)

Back from their quest into the Underworld, with the threat of Lucian hanging over head, Emma is faced with yet another problem—the Immortal Bond. The bond surpasses any reason and is something so complex, not much is known about it. Once an Immortal Bond is made, it is forever. A conjoining of two fated hearts, destined to be perfect companions.
Emma’s heart, already bonded with her Guardian, Kade, has unexpectedly and inconveniently bonded with Ethon, the son of Lucifer. Now she is faced with a decision she doesn’t want to make. Both want nothing more than to love and protect her.
With the arrival of new company and old friends, things are bound to get heated.

*I was provided with a free copy of this book from Cameo, in exchange for my honest review. Thank you!*

I feel like I’ve waited for this book for, like, forever! The 2nd book in the ‘Hidden Wings’, ‘Broken Wings’, left me with a huge cliffhanger and I had to read the 3rd book as soon as possible! The waiting was horrible, believe me! But finally, on March 21st, I got the book. And I was so, unbelievable happy to be able to finally read it! I even dropped ‘The picture of Dorian Gray’ right in the middle for ‘Tethered Wings’.

Even though I enjoyed ‘Tethered Wings’ a lot, ‘Broken Wings’ remains my favorite book in the ‘Hidden Wings’ series.  Comparing this book with the other two, there was hardly any action in it. Yes, there were some dangerous situations, but they were easily passed, so ‘Tethered Wings’ is very different from ‘Broken Wings’.

This book basically focuses on Jeremy and Lia’s visit and on the love triangle between Kade, Emma and Ethon. It might sound boring, but it’s not. Of course, I would’ve liked some more action, since I was used to lots of action from Cameo’s books, but there still are many great things about ‘Tethered Wings’ that didn’t let me put the book down. Let me mention that I was never bored. There was always something that would make me turn the page, something that would make me want to read.

First, there was Lia and Jeremy. O em gi, I love these two. They are so crazy, and funny, and such amazing friends! I love Lia’s enthusiasm and craziness. I love how upbeat she is, how everything she does, it has a note of drama in it. I loved how she would make fun of Jeremy, and I loved Jeremy. He’s so… ugh, he’s so cute! He’s so moody, but he’s so adorable! And he’s such a great friend! They both are!

I love the relationship between Emma, Lia and Jeremy. I love their friendship. I love how they make fun of each other.

This book has so many funny scenes that you will laugh until you cry. There are more reason why this book is funny.

First, Lia, Jeremy and Emma. Lia always makes fun of Jeremy, and Jeremy’s responses are so funny! Plus, he’s such a dork! His awkwardness is so funny!

Than, Ethon and Kade. Maybe it’s inappropiate to find them funny, but it was so funny how they would get all moody around each other and how they would (literally) throw flames with their eyes.

Let’s not forget about the scenes between Dominic and Malachi. OMG, these guys are so funny! There are some scenes where there are both Malachi and Dominic, and Jeremy and Lia. God, those scenes! They cracked me up!

One of the reasons why I kept reading, was Kade. Jee, this boy is perfect. Literally perfect. He’s so romantic, so hot, so charming, so protective, so… so… I cannot find the right words to describe him. He’s everything a girl can ask for and so much more. I really hope he won’t get his heart broken, because Emma and Kade make the perfect couple.

When I was a kid, I loved love triangles. No? Not so much. So this aspect also made me rate this book with 4 stars. I don’t like love triangles. And I hated how Emma would say that she hates Ethon, but hug him the next second. I understand that was part of the bond, but it was clear that she could resist the bond if she wanted to. Plus, how could she let him do those things to her and still say she loves Kade? I think Emma’s choice is pretty simple and obvious, but now, after I’ve read the short preview from ‘Gilded Wings’, I am not so sure about that choice.

I think you’ve already understood that Emma was not my favorite characters this time. Even though I loved her in the first two books, in ‘Tethered Wings’ I wanted to kick her so many times! First, I felt like she was playing with Kade. Let me say it again. She proved that she can resist the bond. But she would still blame the bond for everything she did with Ethon. She was so whiny and she always cried. I understand that this was an emotional period for her, but still, she would cry without a reason. I thought she was strong! I hope she gets back to her old self in the next book!

It was so good to see some of my favorite characters again! Caleb, Courtney (love these two), Samuel, Jeremy, Lia, Kade, Emma’s ‘aunt’… everyone! The character development was great in this book. Except of Emma. I felt like she had kind of a downfall in ‘Tethered Wings’.

Cameo’s writing is as beautiful as always. Seriously, how can she write such beautiful things? I am amazed by her writing, and I will always be. Cameo, you have my respect. You are such an amazing author, and so talented! But please, please, writing the 4th book faster, because…

The ending was such a huge cliffhanger. And I don’t mean the mind-blowing last chapter, where Lucifer makes his appearance (ugh, Lucifer, I would tell you to go to Hell, but it wouldn’t be such a big deal!), but the short preview from ‘Gilded Wings’. Like, what was that?! UGH I want the 4th book, right now!

I think I’ve already said this, but Cameo’s characters are all so real. They feel so real, and you feel like you know them forever! I love this thing. I love how those characters feel like your bffs.

Caleb and Lia were so cute, but I don’t quite understand the thing between them. Lia was always saying how hot Dominic is, how much she wants him, she even eyed Emma with jealousy for dancing with him. Than she hooks up with Caleb? It kinda felt like it happening with no reason or explanation, but they were still cute. I hope this develops in the next books.

I don’t know if it was just my copy, but I found many grammar and punctuation mistakes. Which was weird, because Cameo’s books are always perfectly edited. But it might be only my copy, since it’s a copy for review, so this doesn’t change in any way my rating.

“Tethered Wings” was a great sequel that I truly enjoyed. The ending left me craving more of Cameo’s amazing love story and beautiful writing-style. The last chapter left me really sad, for both Emma and Kade. I hope they will find their way through it.

I can’t wait to read the ‘Gilded Wings’. I bet it will be amazing!

Deleted Scene:

He moved forward a step, backing me up against a thick worktable covered in tools and odd bits of metal. His face darkened, etching with anger but then he sighed and his temper faded. “Look, I fucked up. I couldn’t handle it and I’m sorry.” He looked like a black mountain towering over me. “You need to forgive me. I didn’t mean to say what I did. I need you to come back.”

I studied him. His face held shadows of bruises, his jaw slightly puffy. He’d been in another fight—searching for a way out of this hell. His black jacket and trousers swallowed the brightness of the halogens dotted around the room. He’d always favoured black and now I knew why. He was death incarnate. Everything he touched turned to ruin.—HAZEL

ARC Review: “Fruit of Misfortune” by Nely Cab (‘Creatura’ #2)

*The cover isn’t available yet.*

Let me kick off this review by saying that I was the 1st person  to rate ‘Fruit of Misfortune’ on GoodReads, and I feel very honored and happy to be able to do it. Nely, thank you so much for alowing me to read this book right after you sent it to the editor. You can’t imagine what this means to me, and I thank you for that.

The fact that Nely sent me a copy of the book has nothing to do with the rating or with the review. This is my honest review and opinion about a book I read, and m relationship with the author doesn’t influence it. Just had to make this clear.

Do you know that moment when you wait two years for a book, and when you finally get it, you read it in only 2 days? Two.freaking.days.! You read it, with your heart beating faster and you’re eyes shining because you love the characters so much and the story just sucks you in. And then you finish it. And it’s shocking, and heartbreaking, and you just hate the author, even if you love her, because she’s the reason why you have a new favorite series on your shelf.

Let me give you a glimpase into my mind the moment I’ve finished ‘Fruit of Misfortune’:  Blank. Total silence. And theeen….

WTF? What was this? Did this really happen? Ugh Nely I hate you! I can’t believe you did this to us! What was that cliffhanger? Why? I am… I just can’t… let me crawl in a ball and cry! Why did I finish it? Nely like OMG you need to write the 3rd book UGH I want that book. Why was this book so short OMG I want more I am so depressed I can’t I won’t I can’t

So this was it. This was my mind after finishing ‘Fruit of misfortune’. I was in complete awe and shock.

The reason behind my shock?

The end. That was… that was… such a HUGE plot twist. Such a surprise! I didn’t expect that! Nely, that was such a.. strike! It was so unexpected! That cliffhanger was even worse than the cliffhanger from the first book. You need to start writing the 3rd book, because you’ll have angry readers threatening to kill you if you don’t give them the 3rd book! Including me. J

Reading “Fruit of misfortune” meant always gasping in surprise. The 2nd book in the ‘Creatura’ series is so, but so different from the 1st book! While ‘Creatura’ is more of a love story, ‘Fruit of misfortune’ is a fantasy book, with lots of action and plot twists.

This time, Nely chose not to focus so much on the love story. She, instead, focused on the battle between Isis and the monster inside her or on her attempt to save everyone around her. And let me say, this change was so unexpected, but so welcomed! “Fruit of misfortune” is very, but very captivating! There’s always a plot twist, always some battle, always a secret revealed, always something that makes you gasp and make you turn the page.

Although I liked this change, I have to admit that I missed David, his romantic lines and the cute story between him and Isis. I missed them and the romantic scenes between them. I missed Galen and Eryx and their stupid, funny lines. This book is more intense and very captivating, but I still missed the romantic side of the 1st book.

The character development in this book was surprising. David was more mature, I think, and more real. But he was kinda absent in this book.  I don’t know why I felt this way. I felt like he was never there. But, as I said, this book is very different from ‘Creatura’, so David was always doing something, always trying to save Isis.

Oh, speaking of Isis. She got on my nerves. She was always stubborn, always whiny, depressed and so, so annoying! I don’t know what happened to her in this volume, but she was always getting on my nerves. She took some really bad decision, and she just wouldn’t listen to anyone. And omg, why did she do this to David?!

One of my favorite characters – also the new character in this series- is Galilea.! Such a badass! And that scene, in the wood! It was so funny! She was so cool, with her short hair and sassy attitude. Loved her.

O.M.G. The plot twists! The plot twists were so unexpected and so…so… mind-blowing!

Nely Cab did it again. She wrote a new brilliant book. But, she didn’t do just that. She took this series to a new level. While in ‘Creatura’ you can find an amazing love story, in ‘Fruit of Misfortune’ you can find more action than love. So, if you felt like ‘Creatura’ was too much of a love story for you, I think you should give ‘Fruit of Misfortune’ a try. You will be surprised, believe me. I didn’t expect the story to took such a drastic turn, but I loved it.

I can’t believe I read the 2nd book in the ‘Creatura’ series. I’m just, like, so sad to know that I need to wait another year or more for the 3rd book. I want it now!

I  definitely think this was a perfect sequel. It’s more captivating and more fun than the 1st book, and I loved this thing. I already miss David, Galen and Eryx, and I SO cannot wait to meet them again in the 3rd volume.

So, people. Go read this book. Now. Because there’s a lot of action, huge plot twist, some hot scenes *wink wink*, sexy characters and unexpected situations. And funny scenes.

Author interview: Tijan (author of ‘Carter Reed’)

Good evening, guys! I’ve good news for you: Tijan (the author of “Carter Reed” and “Fallen Crest High” series) agreed to do an interview for my blog! How awesome is this? Thank you, Tijan, for agreeing to do this!

You can find out more about her books on GoodReads.

1.Hello,Tijan!It’s a pleasure to have you on my blog. Would you like to tell us something about you, please?

I never know what to say for this question. Haha. I’m usually pretty private with personal questions, but I will say that I began writing later in life. It was after college and I started posting all my works on I had to teach myself how to write!

2.Would you tell something to us about your book?

Carter Reed is a darker-themed book than most. It starts with a gruesome scene and goes from there. Emma does something that could make her hunted by a mafia family so she has to reach out for help from the rivaling mafia family. The guy who she needs help from is also a childhood friend, famous in his own right because of his looks and mafia connections. When she connects with him again, Carter’s main goal is to protect Emma.

I don’t know if I should say anymore without giving things away. 🙂

3.How did you come up with the story?

I was trying to sleep one night and the beginning of the book came to me. I bolted out of bed and started writing notes.

4.When did you start writing?

Not until after undergraduate school. I had never written creatively before and I had been told that my academic-type writing was bad so writing a novel had never ever entered my mind. I just started one time at my family’s lake cabin and it clicked for me after that.

5.Who or what inspires you?

Humble people inspire me. Anyone who doesn’t think they are ‘better’ or ‘superior’ to others inspire me.

6.Which is your favourite book series or book? Why?

I’m not a huge JK Rowling fan. I’m not a diehard Harry Potter fan, but I really enjoy her books. I grew up reading Nora Roberts, under her penname JD Robb. I used to inhale her books.

7.Which is your favorite movie?

Please don’t be disappointed with my answer, but Elf. I just love that childlike sense of humor. I think it’s the only movie I can watch over and over again. Most other movies will eventually get old for me, but not that one.

8.What advice would you give to someone who wants to publish a book?

Write. Write. Write. Write. Write. Etc. Get my drift? Haha. Keep writing and keep learning. The other advice would be not to get involved with being competitive with other authors. There’s always going to be other books coming out. There’s always going to be a book better than yours or worse than yours, but just focus on your books. Make yourself proud by what you put out, then no one can tear you down.

9. What kind of music do you like?

Fast techno or dark, brooding music. Otis Taylor. I recently found Jack Savoretti and I love him. Otherwise anything Rachel Rabin will put out. I think she’s a new artist because she doesn’t have many songs for purchase.

10.Did you ever want to be a mystical creature?

I don’t know about mystical creature, but I would love to be able to fly. I’ve actually dreamt about it and I loved that feeling.

11.How and when did you decide that you’d like to publish your book?

I never considered it until I saw an article about someone who had published a bunch of books and got a publishing deal. That gave me hope.

Do you have a message for my blog’s followers?

I hope you enjoyed this? Not really, just a huge thanks for any who have purchased or supported my writing.

Interesting interview, right? If you have any message for Tijan, please leave it in a comment! 🙂
